How to Move a Range or Stove

Your range or stove is highly susceptible to damage during a move. Utility connections, intricate parts and polished finishes will all require special handling. It is recommended that you clean your unit well in advance and let qualified professionals take care of servicing and moving the appliance.

Be Careful with High Voltage and Gas Connections

Step One: Disconnect the Appliance

You are required to have your gas range disconnected prior to moving day. At destination, you will need a qualified gas installer to check your gas supply, connect the range to the gas line, seal any openings, light the pilot and handle any other hook-up procedures.

You may authorize your United agent to pre-arrange for appliance servicing before your move date. This will be provided through a trusted, third-party service which will be added to the Bill of Lading as an additional cost.

For an electric range, generally no servicing at origin is required. However, when you reach destination, have your power supply checked for the current electrical requirements. Certain ranges, such as those with air-ventilated grills, vary on the voltage they require.

Step Two: Cleaning

Wipe off the outer surfaces of the range or stove with a mild detergent to remove excess grease and residue. If your unit has a stainless steel finish, you may want to apply a steel protectant before you wrap it in appliance pads.

Detach all knobs, plug-in coils, drip pans, grates, broiler pans and oven racks and store them in a separate box to ensure all of your parts remain together.

If your range top can be raised, clean the area underneath with degreaser and finish with hot, soapy water. Be sure to follow guidelines listed in your owner’s manual or call the appliance manufacturer for information on your specific model.

Please Take Notice

Appliances require special consideration as you prepare for your move. Many large units have high-voltage connections or gas supplies that require the attention of an appliance technician. Your United cannot help you disconnect, service or reinstall appliances that fall into this category.
